Fire. Good Fire?

Fire. Good Fire? is an exploration into the idea of fire stewardship and indigenous fire practices using the art of carbon dust sculpting. I intend to bring light to the growing concern not just of these ecological disasters, but to the idea that they might have been minimalized if we had listened to the Indigenous Fire Keepers and used their knowledge of fire-burning practices to better serve the land. Good Fire is a term conceived of by Matthew Kristoff and Amy Cardinal of how indigenous fire stewardship practices are a way of maintaining fire knowledge practices for a range of values and benefits. My question with this research is to answer this, is there such a thing as good fire? If so, why has it not been practiced to avoid the situation we now find ourselves in? If we go back and engage the knowledge of Indigenous Fire Keepers do we have a chance at healing our land?

Where the Land Cradles Me

How do you describe the feeling when you place your feet on the ground and it feels like home? This is what I am trying to capture in this body of work. The moments when your breath is taken away and pillows of air cause you to experience extreme and utter interconnection.

Resin and Acrylic

Inspiration was found for this series on the west coast of Canada. This is my most recent series of the land. I wanted to test out using the rhythmic ribbons of paint for a background, applying a resin layer, and then meticulously painting the lines and images I recalled on top. The sunflower additions were created in 2022 amidst the invasion of Ukraine. I posted these works and sold them with 100% of the profits going to the Ukrainian Humanitarian Fund. The large sunflowers are a symbol of hope and resilience and the smaller ones are representations of the people.

This is How I Paint the Mountains

How do you paint something that has inspired so many and has been represented over and over again? You put your own spin on it. I can't tell you how much fun I had creating this series in my very own personal and unique way. Some were created very methodically and others in the middle of the night amidst sleepless moments. All in all, they gave me a sense of joy, a sense of fun and a sense that I too had captured these incredible giants in my own unique way.

Mixed Media

I always like to keep my work fresh and creative, staying in the moment and giving a nod to the past. Creating the work in this collection was fun, and I pushed my artistic abilities.
